Petco company and footprint statistics

Petco was founded in 1965, and 2025 marked the company’s 60th anniversary, according to the Petco annual report 2024. The report said Petco had more than 29,000 total partners and more than 26,000 pet care center partners as of February 1, 2025. It also reported seven Partner Resource Groups.

Petco’s public descriptions use slightly different scopes for its physical network. Its About page says the company operates more than 1,500 stores across the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The annual report, using a U.S. and Puerto Rico pet care center count at fiscal year-end, reported 1,398 centers at the end of fiscal 2024.

The annual-report series shows the reported U.S. and Puerto Rico pet care center count declining from 1,430 at the end of fiscal 2022 to 1,423 at the end of fiscal 2023 and 1,398 at the end of fiscal 2024. These figures describe fiscal year-end counts, while the broader “more than 1,500 stores” description includes Mexico and is not directly interchangeable with the annual-report series.

Stores, partners, and services

Petco said on its About page that it has more than 100 in-store veterinary hospitals. That figure identifies the company’s in-store veterinary presence, while the 1,398 annual-report count identifies pet care centers in the United States and Puerto Rico at the end of fiscal 2024. The two measures describe different parts of the operating footprint.

Petco’s partner figures also provide a view of scale beyond store locations. The annual report counted more than 29,000 total partners, including more than 26,000 pet care center partners, as of February 1, 2025. The report also said the company had seven Partner Resource Groups.

The annual report divides fiscal 2024 net sales into three operating categories. Consumables generated $3.043 billion, supplies and companion animals generated $2.074 billion, and services and other generated $999.571 million. Together, the reported categories correspond to total net sales of $6.116 billion.

These categories help distinguish product purchases from service activity. Consumables include recurring pet needs, while supplies and companion animals represent another product category. Services and other includes the company’s service-related sales grouping as reported in the annual report; the supplied figures do not provide a further breakdown within that category.

Sales and business performance

Petco reported total net sales of $6.116 billion in fiscal 2024, with net sales down 2.2% year over year. Gross profit was $2.324 billion, down 1.3% year over year. The reported gross profit rate was 38.0% in fiscal 2024, compared with 37.6% in fiscal 2023.

Comparable sales increased 0.3% in fiscal 2024. The comparable-sales increases were 1.8% in fiscal 2023 and 4.5% in fiscal 2022. Comparable sales and total net sales measure different things: the former tracks the company’s comparable-sales measure, while the latter is the reported dollar value of total sales.

The fiscal 2024 sales mix was led by consumables. The category’s $3.043 billion represented the largest of the three reported net-sales groupings. Supplies and companion animals accounted for $2.074 billion, and services and other accounted for $999.571 million. No unsupported percentage split is added here because the provided figures do not require recalculation.

Petco also reported fourth-quarter figures in its Q4 and FY2024 earnings release. Q4 2024 net revenue was $1.6 billion, comparable sales increased 0.5%, and gross profit was $589.3 million. The quarter’s GAAP net loss was $13.8 million, while adjusted EBITDA was $96.1 million.

Profitability and cash flow

Adjusted EBITDA was $336.526 million in fiscal 2024, compared with $401.103 million in fiscal 2023 and $530.769 million in fiscal 2022. This is a non-GAAP measure presented in the annual-report figures and should be kept distinct from operating income and net income.

Petco reported selling, general and administrative expenses of $2.317 billion in fiscal 2024. Operating income was $7.051 million, and interest expense was $143.531 million. Income before taxes and equity method investees was a loss of $127.966 million. The reported income tax benefit was $7.481 million, and income from equity method investees was $18.669 million.

The resulting fiscal 2024 net loss was $101.816 million. These results show why adjusted EBITDA should not be read as a replacement for GAAP net income: the supplied fiscal 2024 figures report positive adjusted EBITDA alongside a GAAP net loss.

Cash-flow measures from the Petco Q4 and FY2024 earnings release were also reported separately. Net cash provided by operating activities was $177.7 million in fiscal 2024, and free cash flow was $49.7 million. The release presents free cash flow as a separate cash measure from operating cash flow.

Assets and liabilities

At February 1, 2025, Petco reported total assets of $5.194 billion. Total current assets were $973.619 million. The balance sheet included cash and cash equivalents of $165.756 million, net receivables of $40.425 million, merchandise inventories of $653.329 million, prepaid expenses of $53.515 million, and other current assets of $60.594 million.

Longer-term asset categories included fixed assets, net of $725.438 million; operating lease right-of-use assets of $1.302 billion; goodwill of $980.064 million; and a trade name valued at $1.025 billion. Each of these figures was reported at February 1, 2025 in the Petco annual report 2024.

Reported liabilities at the same date included accounts payable and book overdrafts of $492.878 million, accrued salaries and employee benefits of $157.460 million, and accrued expenses and other liabilities of $177.079 million. The current portion of operating lease liabilities was $306.400 million. The current portion of long-term debt and other lease liabilities was $5.346 million.

Petco Love and animal-care statistics

Petco and Petco Love say they have helped find homes for nearly 7 million animals, according to the Petco About page. Petco Love’s own organization page says it has more than 7.1 million pet adoptions and counting, more than 4,000 animal-welfare organizations in its network, and more than $433 million invested in lifesaving initiatives.

Petco Love also says it works with 1,400 Petco stores across the country. The “nearly 7 million” homes figure and the “more than 7.1 million” adoptions figure use different wording and are retained as reported; they should not be treated as a single identical metric.

For aquatic animal care, Petco says more than 95% of the aquatic life it offers is aquacultured. Its Industry-Leading Animal Care page also says all of its freshwater fish and corals are aquacultured. These are company statements about its offering and sourcing, not independent estimates.

Petco outlook and guidance

The Petco Q4 and FY2024 earnings release provided guidance for FY2025. The company called for adjusted EBITDA of $375 million to $390 million, capital expenditures of $130 million to $140 million, and net interest expense of about $130 million.

The same release called for about 20 to 30 net real estate closures in FY2025. It also provided Q1 2025 adjusted EBITDA guidance of $82 million to $83 million. These are company forecasts or guidance for future periods, not completed results.

Keeping the periods separate matters when reading Petco statistics. Fiscal 2024 sales, profit, cash flow, assets, and liabilities are reported historical figures; Q4 2024 figures describe one quarter; and FY2025 and Q1 2025 guidance are forward-looking estimates. The store, partner, animal-welfare, and animal-care figures retain the dates or wording attached to the sources.
